MGC was founded in 2014 by Dr. Douglas Hofmann and Dr. Scott Roberts to help commercial companies navigate the complex landscape of advanced metals and manufacturing technologies. Both founders hold Ph.D.’s in Materials Science and Engineering from Caltech and bring over 20 years of experience in government aerospace, defense, and commercial spinoffs.
Together, Dr. Hofmann and Dr. Roberts have been awarded more than 40 U.S. patents, founded three commercial spinoff companies, and successfully licensed and commercialized materials technologies across diverse industries. With over a decade of consulting experience, they are globally recognized for their contributions to materials science. Their accolades include the Presidential Early Career Award, Fellowship in the National Academy of Inventors, and the prestigious Lew Allen Award.
Dr. Hofmann and Dr. Roberts bring an exceptional breadth of expertise in materials and manufacturing, demonstrated by their 100+ peer-reviewed publications and numerous keynote presentations at leading scientific events. Their specialties include bulk metallic glass (amorphous metals), metal matrix composites, and novel alloy design. They are also leaders in applications for additive manufacturing (metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites), advanced thermal devices, multi-material printing, and planetary and strain wave gear alloy development. Their work spans materials for robotics, multifunctional 3D printing, micrometeoroid shielding, hypervelocity impact testing, deployable structures, and infrared thermal imaging.
In manufacturing, they have developed novel metal melting capabilities, including arc melting, suction casting, and metal injection molding. Their expertise extends to titanium alloys, commercial manufacturing, foundry operations, friction stir processing, claddings, overlays, and coatings, as well as pioneering advancements in 3D printing technologies.
